Since LA is between San Diego and Santa Barbara it would make sense that you go thru there.
101 to I-5 or 101 to 405 is the way. The trick is the when. It can take three to six hours. A weekday at night is good. The middle of the night is the best.
Go on line first and check out the traffic. An accident can back you up for hours. A round about route might be worth it to get past a problem.
