How can I use Google Maps to find my own custom route ... not the one they provide?

I am traveling down to North Carolina in a few weeks from Buffalo, NY. If I put in Directions "Buffalo, NY %26gt; Durham, NC", it gives me Googles route, which goes all through West Virginia and PA. I've done that route before and I really don't like it since it gets really isolated in West Virginia. A friend told me about the route that goes through Washington and Richmond down to Raleigh. I want to find this route, but how could I make Google maps or Google Earth to show custom directions for me?How can I use Google Maps to find my own custom route ... not the one they provide?
I never use Google Maps. I use Yahoo!Maps.

And when I put Buffalo, NY in as the source and Durham, NC in as the destination, it came back coming through DC and Richmond.

I got the same route when I used Google Maps.

Its a simple matter of printing the maps out and then figuring your route! How can I use Google Maps to find my own custom route ... not the one they provide?
mapquest? or just set up a route urself! come on! no one's THAT lazy! ans i would not use google Earth, it is not updated. that could cause some problems! How can I use Google Maps to find my own custom route ... not the one they provide?
Try the new Yahoo! Maps Beta at http://maps.yahoo.com/beta/index.php . It allows you to put more points on your route than just a beginning and an end. (This works best in IE, though it will try to work in some other browsers.)

For example, you may want to put Buffalo as your starting point, Washington as your first destination, Richmond as your second destination, Raleigh as your thrid destination, and Durham as your fourth destination. The resulting URL is http://maps.yahoo.com/beta/index.php#max鈥?/a> .

The only thing to look out for in the turn-by-turn driving directions is that it assumes you want to actually drive into the center of each destination. If you want to drive straight through, then skip some steps to construct your own route that stays on the main highway.
